Chapter 13
Seraphine
No. no. I can’t be going into heat. Not here, not so soon. I’m scared. I’m so scared.
But a little voice in my head whispers that it’s already been two months, if my heat is returning. Or maybe with all these alpha’s pheromones, my body subconsciously re-entered estrous early. The beta could have drugged me with fertility drugs when I was unconscious too. There’s no way it’s been two months in this hell, Two months of constant pain and torture.
I see nothing as I lose myself in my thoughts, but a caustic laugh pulls me back to reality. The beta cackles loudly, clearly excited about my horrible predicament.
His nostrils flare, scenting the air deeply before he says, “A little longer before it’s here. Plenty of time to get you situated.” The beta’s words bring stone-cold fear skirting down my spine, settling in my belly like lead. The rattle of keys only sends this terror higher as my heart slams against my ribs. Blood rushes in my ears.
The beta unlocks the cell door, the creak of it opening horrifying. Without a care for the multiple injuries lining my body, he yanks me up. He doesn’t even give me time to get my feet under me before he’s dragging me out of my prison and down the hall. I scramble for purchase to ease the agony of my wounds pulling with every step.
I’m finally on my feet, though my body is hunched low, the pain making it difficult to walk upright. Out of the corner of my eye, the beta’s head whipping side to side, examining everyone in the various cells. As I walk past, more of the inhabitants start to throw themselves against the bars, much like the others.
I whimper before I can stop it, and I can only pray the beta didn’t hear it. I thank whatever powers that are listening that the madman is too absorbed in whatever he’s doing to pay me much attention.
Up and down the hall we go, circling around once we get to the end, only to make our way back through. We pass the cells again and again until the beta finally pulls to a stop. My breaths are coming hard and my legs shake from the painful exercise, so I take the brief pause to collect myself as best as I can.
Glancing up from under my eyelashes, I see three large forms in the cell before us. One I recognize as the alpha guard from the first day here. His ice-blue eyes, even now, seem to pierce my soul in a way that makes me grow more uncomfortable the longer we maintain eye contact. Unable to take any more, I flick my gaze to the next male.
This one has a matted and filthy head of what was once blond hair, reaching halfway down his back. His eyes are amber, nearly gold in their intensity. He too stares at me with a look that makes me uneasy. These eyes are full of calculation.
With a quick flick, I take in the last male in the cell.
